Summer time is crazy time where routines and schedules are out the window, but we are loyal to the Summer Reading Club.

One rainy summer evening, we went to the library to get our stamps in our Summer Reading Club booklets. Only to discover that our local library has a Scavenger Hunt with Ten Clues and a Decoder Ring and it’s all in French so it’s Really Hard for Me.

Like so often in life, there are two paths you can take – one for 5-8 year olds and a more difficult path for 9-12 year olds. Basically, there are Ten Easy Clues and Ten Hard Clues. I wanted to do the Ten Easy Clues because my level of French is eternally 5-8 years old, but my kids wanted to do the Ten Hard Clues. Sacré bleu. Off we went.

It took over an hour which is perfect because I am always looking for a reason to stretch library time. I just love the smell of books.

If you attempt this feat, please note that Clue #3 (INDICE #3) is really hard and it took not one, not two, but three different librarians to help solve it. My kids and I held our breath (maybe just me) as the first librarian came over and read the clue and pondered and suggested something that I explained we had already tried. So he shuffled away to find another librarian who joined the challenge. She didn’t last long before they both went to get Queen Librarian who gave us a hint that allowed us to solve the clue and feel like little geniuses.

We found the GOLDEN KEY. And you can, too (if you’re local).
